Lorry driver crushed to death when car fell on him

A HGV driver who was working underneath a vehicle at his Burton home died when it slipped off the ramp and crushed him, his inquest has heard.

Steven Woodings was found at his home in Dovecliffe Road, Stretton[1], on March 6, 2021, while working on his Land Rover.

He was discovered at the scene by his partner Julia Dickerson and the emergency services were called. Firefighters got the vehicle off him with paramedics freeing and treating Mr Woodings, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest into his death heard that the 59-year-old worked as a HGV driver and he had been working on the vehicle at his home address.

A post mortem examination was carried out and found that he died from substantial crush injuries to his chest. A toxicology report also found no drugs or alcohol in his system.

PC Shonei Procter, who is based at Burton Police Station with Staffordshire Police[2], told the inquest that they were called to the house at around lunchtime and the firefighters and paramedics were already at the scene.

The fire crews were lifting off the vehicle and the paramedics were trying to free Mr Woodings. A neighbour had confirmed they had seen him working under the vehicle prior to the accident.

A police investigation found there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

South Staffordshire coroner[4] Margaret Jones ruled that Mr Woodings died from crush injuries to the chest and recorded a verdict of accidental death.

She said as she addressed Mr Woodings’ family: “It’s a very brief but very sad story. Steve was a gentleman who liked to tinker about with cars and it was something he was fairly familiar with doing.

“He was working underneath a vehicle and sadly it slipped off the ramp and he got caught underneath. This is a very tragic accident.

“I am so very, very sorry for your loss.”
