A555 Airport Relief Road shuts for hours after serious crash involving police car

The Airport Relief Road was shut for hours today after a serious crash involving a police car. The collision happened on the A555 in Hazel Grove at the junction with Macclesfield Road and London Road North, close to Brookside Garden Centre, just before 2.30pm. The North West Ambulance Service said two air ambulances attended the scene, alongside a rapid response vehicle and an operational commander.

One casualty was taken to hospital with major trauma injuries, while two other patients are being treated for minor injuries. A British Transport Police car was involved in the crash, with a spokesperson saying: "We can confirm that a British Transport Police vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle on London North Road, Poynton.

"The incident happened at 1pm today (17/02) and a man has been taken to hospital for treatment. No officers were injured.

"The police vehicle was responding to a nearby emergency and blue lights were illuminated. "The circumstances to the collision will now be investigated by Greater Manchester Police." The road reopened at about 8.30pm.
