NRL legend Johnathan Thurston is first on the scene of a nasty crash before driver of 'stolen' car with a 'rats tail and tattoos' flees the scene

Rugby league legend Johnathan Thurston was at the scene of a road accident after a man with a rats tail and face tattoos allegedly ploughed a stolen Holden Colorado into a courier truck on a major highway.

The tattooed driver allegedly veered onto the wrong side of the Bruce Highway, south of Rollingstone on Queensland's north coast, at about 10am on Monday.

The Holden collided with the truck before swerving off the road and running into a concrete water pipe, damaging the pillar.

The former Cowboys player arrived on the scene and started talking to the two people in the truck.

'He's pulled up, I believe he may know the driver of the truck,' Senior Constable Brett Paganoni told The Courier Mail.

The tattooed man, believed to be in his 20s, fled south towards Townsville on foot.

Police found blood on clothes in the Holden.

The vehicle was reported stolen on Monday at 12am.

The two victims were taken to Townsville University Hospital with minor injuries.
